26 years later.. all 8 accused in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy are sentenced to 2 years imprisonment. While the Nazis were put on death row later and Saddam Hussain was hanged for his war crimes by an international tribunal, how can the accused in Indias' gas tragedy accused walk away with such a light sentence ?

The row between the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority
(IRDA) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is
turning into an arm-wrestling match between two statutory bodies with
huge clout. The chain of Sebi's argument goes like this. Life insurers
offer unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips). Ulips invest in equity.
Hence, Sebi wants Ulip schemes registered like mutual funds. IRDA has
no intention of ceding control. Since both regulatory bodies have
clout, they will eventually work out some compromise.

In my opinion, registration would serve no real purpose. Insurers
would find some way to carry on raising money cheap and investing in
the stock market. That, in itself, is not a problem - the stock market
is an excellent investment avenue. What is a problem is that Ulips are
structured such that they offer very poor returns to investors.

Ulips have been around for several years. The structures are known.
Every financial newspaper and business magazine of repute has analysed
Ulips and shown in detail why investors should avoid them.

In themselves, Ulips are not fraudulent; it's just that investors can
get far better deals. So this is a classic case of “buyer beware”. If
investors insist on buying Ulips, there isn't much more that can be
done since there are already ample warning signs in the public space.
It is also easy to understand why agents push Ulips - due to huge
front-loaded commissions.

Ulips offer a combination of insurance and investment, paid for in an
annual lump sum. The insurer combines a term cover, deducts the
premium. Then it deducts commissions. It invests what's left in the
policy-holder's choice of debt and equity. One good thing is that Ulip
allocations are flexible. The same scheme will allow very large
variations in the ratio of debt:equity investments.

The disadvantages
If the unit holder dies, the nominee gets a certain sum assured as in
any term plan. Or else, units appreciate in value and therefore, a
nest-egg is created. So far, so good. The devil lies in the details.
The first couple of years have enormous commissions - usually 70 per
cent or more. This huge outflow means that very little of the initial
commitment is invested. A basic knowledge of compounding will show
this is not an optimal way to grow money.

The second nasty detail is that most Ulips run on an “either/or”
basis. If you die, you will get either the value of the term cover or
the value of the units, whichever is higher. You won't get both. This
means essentially that the insurer is always swallowing a large
component of your annual payment.

The third major structural issue with most Ulips is that many
investors are tempted by the agent telling them that they only have to
pay a premium for the first three years or so. If you choose not to
pay a premium after that mandatory period, the annual term cover
charges are deducted from the standing unit-value. So the investment
corpus evaporates.

Worse than the alternatives
Under almost all circumstances, Ulips yield lower returns than a
combination of a simple term cover and a basket of equivalent mutual
funds that together commits the same lump sum. If a Ulip-holder dies
early, the estate receives a lower payout. If a Ulip holder survives,
he receives a lower payout. If he dies later, his estate receives a
lower payout.
Risk profile doesn't matter. A conservative person should take term
cover and buy debt oriented funds with the surplus. An aggressive
person should take term cover and buy diversified equity funds. Even
an endowment insurance policy plus funds will generally produce better
returns than a Ulip. (Endowment or “money-back” schemes charge higher
premiums than term covers so less money goes into the fund portfolio.)

The reasons why a separate term cover plus a fund portfolio always
outscores a Ulip are simple. Term covers have nominal commissions and
so do mutuals. Much more money is therefore, actually invested.
Second, there's no “either/or”. In the event of the death of the
holder of a term cover who also holds a fund portfolio, the nominee
receives both the policy payout and inherits the portfolio.

None of these Ulip details are concealed as such. It is written there
in black and white on the agreements you sign. You can easily do the
maths on the term cover (many insurers have calculators on their
websites). However, it is not in salesmen's interest to point it out
and they don't.

The mistake people make is to confuse insurance with investment.
Insurance is a bet you want to lose. Investment is a bet you want to
win. Two entirely separate intentions. Use two different instruments.

Came as a forward to me through a forum..

One of the modern concept is ‘Exit interview’ - conducted by an employer of a departing employee. It is generally conducted by HR expecting the employee to be candid and not burn the bridge. The idea is to collate useful information on working conditions and making corrections, if required. Many good companies see people as assets and not costs and it would immensely help any organisation to capture the knowledge of their employees. Any organisation which has structured way of organising its practices in a structured way is bound to succeed. Exit interview could be a tool to capture knowledge from those parting and the benefits could be :
キ vital knowledge is not lost to the organisation when people leave
キ the learning curve of new people joining the organisation is shortened
キ they can be done relatively quickly and inexpensively
キ they can result in the leaver having a more positive view of the organisation
Here is a thought-provoking article received from a friend of mine who has successfully related the concept of learning to the greatest of the Epics – Ramayana & Mahabaratha. I liked it and you too might relish this.

In Both The Great Epics of India , Ramayan and Mahabharata, war ends not with celebration of victory but with transmission of knowledge. In the Ramayan, Ravan lies mortally wounded on the battlefield and the monkeys are celebrating their victory, when Ram turns to his brother, Lakshman, and says, “While Ravan was a brute, he was also a great scholar. Go to him quickly and request him to share whatever knowledge he can.”

The obedient Lakshman rushes to Ravan’s side and whispers in his ears, “Demonking, all your life you have taken not given. Now the noble Ram gives you an opportunity to mend your ways. Share your vast wisdom. Do not let it die with you. For that you will be surely be blessed.”

Ravan responds by simply turning away. An angry Lakshman goes back to Ram and says: “He is as arrogant as he always was, too proud to share anything.” Ram looks at his brother and asks him softly, “Where did you stand while asking him for knowledge?” “Next to his head so that I hear what he had to say clearly.” Ram smiles, places his bow on the ground and walks to where Ravan lies. Lakshman watches in astonishment as his brother kneels at Ravan’s feet. With palms joined, with extreme humility, Ram says, “Lord of Lanka, you abducted my wife, a terrible crime for which I have been forced to punish you. Now, you are no more my enemy. I see you now as you are known across the world, as the wise son of Rishi Vishrava. I bow to you and request you to share your wisdom with me. Please do that for if you die without doing so, all your wisdom will be lost forever to the world.”

To Lakshman’s surprise, Ravan opens his eyes and raises his arms to salute Ram, “If only I had more time as your teacher than as your enemy. Standing at my feet as a student should, unlike your rude younger brother, you are a worthy recipient of my knowledge. I have very little time so I cannot share much but let me tell you one important lesson I have learnt in my life. Things that are bad for you seduce you easily; you run towards them impatiently. But things are actually good for you fail to attract you; you shun them creatively, finding powerful excuses to justify your procrastination. That is why I was impatient to abduct Sita but avoided meeting you. This is the wisdom of my life, Ram. My last words. I give it to you.” With these words, Ravan dies.

There’s similar knowledge transmission after the Mahabharat war is over and the Kauravas are all dead. As the victorious Pandavas are about to assume control of Hastinapur, Krishna advises them to talk to Bhisma, their grand uncle, who lies mortally wounded on the battlefield. As a result of a blessing, death would elude him for some time. “Make him talk until his last breath. Ask him questions. He has a lot to tell,” says Krishna .

Sure enough, when prompted, the dying Bhisma spends hours discussing various topics: history, geography, politics, economics, management, war, ethics, morality, astronomy, metaphysics and spirituality. Bhisma’s discourse is captured in the Shanti Parva (discussions of peace) and Anushasan Parva (discussions on discipline) that makes up a quarter of the Mahabharata. After listening to their grandsire, the Pandavas have a better understanding of the world, and this makes them better kings.
Ram asked ravan for his wisdom before his death. The pandavas listened to a lengthy discourse from bhisma as he lay dying on the battlefield. This in the context of organisations, is knowledge management. Both these stories draw attention to the value of knowledge.In triumph, it is easy to claim the material possessions of the defeated, but it is not easy to claim their knowledge. Knowledge does not outlive death.

Every day, an organization churns out vast amounts of knowledge. Every day, people leave organisations, taking their knowledge with them – knowledge which they acquired because they are part of the organisation. They take with them knowledge of clients, markets, business processes, tricks of the trade. These may not be confidential information or patented information, but it is information that gives a competitive edge.

Long has this knowledge drain been recognised. Over the past decade, a whole new business process known as knowledge management has evolved that seeks to harness, store, transmit this knowledge. Every CEO agrees that it is a valuable business process, that investment in it is critical. Policies have been made, people have been hired and systems have been deployed.
Unfortunately, for all the initial enthusiasm, implementation has been lacking. Unlike retrieving cash, retrieving knowledge from employees, both current and future, is not easy. Often because they are like Sahadeva.

Sahadeva was the youngest Pandava and, in the South Indian Mahabharata, he is described as an expert in many predictive sciences such as astrology, palmistry and face reading. But he is cursed: if he ever gave any information voluntarily, his head will split into a thousand pieces. That is why he is silent throughout the epic. He knows every fortune and misfortune that his family will go through, but he can never use his knowledge to forewarn anyone. When Yudhishtira finally learns of his brother’s prowess he is furious. “Why did you not tell me all that you knew?” All he gets in response is Sahadeva’s silence. Most employees in an organisation are Sahadevas.

Sahadevas are of two types: either they are unwilling to share their knowledge or they don’t have the means to do so. The former category knows that knowledge is power and will not give it away under any circumstances. The latter category is willing to share knowledge but either no one asks them for it or there is no system where they can make it available for others.
Knowledge Management is leadership driven. Only a Ram, not a Laskhman can do it. He must first believe in it. He must respect the fact that everyone in his organisation, even those who he does not particularly like, are repositories of great wisdom – not only knowledge of things that work but also knowledge of things that do not work. He must make conscious efforts to capture as much of it as possible.
The simplest method is talking to people, while they are on the job and especially when they are leaving the organisation. An exit interviews must never be a ritual. Neither must it be an exercise to just get the venom out nor an exercise to expose the underbelly that has prompted the resignation. It must be a concerted effort to gather what was the knowledge acquired between joining and leaving the organisation. This sounds very logical though most organisations do not do this.

Every organisation has a very powerful Finance Department that works round the clock to keep an eye on money flowing in and out of the organisation. Internal and external auditors, controllers and accountants keep a hawk’s eye on every bill and purchase order. But not even a fraction of that energy is used by companies to manage their knowledge.This indicates that most organisations do not believe that Lakshmi follows Saraswati: they do not believe that existence of knowledge systems improve efficiency and effectiveness and can provide raw materials to provoke new ideas or prevent old mistakes. Unless a leader believes that Saraswati is critical, he will end up with an organisation of Sahadevas.
Take a step back. Check if you are creatively shunning this rather tedious matter of knowledge management. If you are, then remember the wise words of Ravan: it must be actually good for you.

Driving in India For the benefit of every Tom, Dick and Harry visiting India and daring to drive on Indian roads, I am offering a few hints for survival. They are applicable to every place in India except Bihar, where life outside a vehicle is only marginally safer.
Indian road rules broadly operate within the domain of karma where you do your best, and leave the results to your insurance company. The hints are as follows:
Do we drive on the left or right of the road?
The answer is "both". Basically you start on the left of the road, unless it is occupied. In that case, go to the right, unless that is also occupied. Then proceed by occupying the next available gap, as in chess. Just trust your instincts, ascertain the direction, and proceed. Adherence to road rules leads to much misery and occasional fatality. Most drivers don't drive, but just aim their vehicles in the intended direction.
Don't stop at pedestrian crossings just because some fool wants to cross the road. You may do so only if you enjoy being bumped in the back.
Blowing your horn is not a sign of protest as in some countries. We horn to express joy, resentment, frustration, romance and bare lust (two brisk blasts), or, just mobilize a dozing cow in the middle of the bazaar.
Keep informative books in the glove compartment. You may read them during traffic jams, while awaiting the chief minister's motorcade, or waiting for the rain waters to recede when over ground traffic meets underground drainage.
Occasionally you might see what looks like a UFO with blinking colored lights and weird sounds emanating from within. This is an illuminated bus, full of happy pilgrims singing bhajans. These pilgrims go at breakneck speed, seeking contact with the Almighty, often meeting with success.
Auto Rickshaw (Baby Taxi): The result of a collision between a rickshaw and an automobile, this three-wheeled vehicle works on an external combustion engine that runs on a mixture of kerosene oil and creosote. This triangular vehicle carries iron rods, gas cylinders or passengers three times its weight and dimension, at an unspecified fare. After careful geometric calculations, children are folded and packed into these auto rickshaws until some children in the periphery are not in contact with the vehicle at all. Then their school bags are pushed into the microscopic gaps all round so those minor collisions with other vehicles on the road cause no permanent damage. Of course, the peripheral children are charged half the fare and also learn Newton's laws of motion en route to school. Auto-rickshaw drivers follow the road rules depicted in the film Ben Hur, and are licensed to irritate.
Mopeds: The moped looks like an oil tin on wheels and makes noise like an electric shaver. It runs 30 miles on a teaspoon of petrol and travels at break-bottom speed. As the sides of the road are too rough for a ride, the moped drivers tend to drive in the middle of the road; they would rather drive under heavier vehicles instead of around them and are often "mopped" off the tarmac.
Leaning Tower of Passes: Most bus passengers are given free passes and during rush hours, there is absolute mayhem. There are passengers hanging off other passengers, who in turn hang off the railings and the overloaded bus leans dangerously, defying laws of gravity but obeying laws of surface tension. As drivers get paid for overload (so many Rupees per kg of passenger), no questions are ever asked. Steer clear of these buses by a width of three passengers.
One-way Street: These boards are put up by traffic people to add jest in their otherwise drab lives. Don't stick to the literal meaning and proceed in one direction. In metaphysical terms, it means that you cannot proceed in two directions at once. So drive, as you like, in reverse throughout, if you are the fussy type. Least I sound hypercritical; I must add a positive point also. Rash and fast driving in residential areas has been prevented by providing a "speed breaker"; two for each house.
Night driving on Indian roads can be an exhilarating experience. In a way, it is like playing Russian roulette, because you do not know who amongst the drivers is loaded. What looks like premature dawn on the horizon turns out to be a truck attempting a speed record. On encountering it, just pull partly into the field adjoining the road until the phenomenon passes. Our roads do not have shoulders, but occasional boulders. Do not blink your lights expecting reciprocation. The only dim thing in the truck is the driver, and with the peg of illicit arrack (alcohol) he has had at the last stop, his total cerebral functions add up to little more than a naught. Truck drivers are the James Bonds of India, and are licensed to kill. Often you may encounter a single powerful beam of light about six feet above the ground. This is not a super motorbike, but a truck approaching you with a single light on, usually the left one. It could be the right one, but never get too close to investigate. Of course, all this occurs at night, on the trunk roads. During the daytime, trucks are more visible, except that the drivers will never show any Signal. (And you must watch for the absent signals; they are the greater threat). Only, you will often observe that the cleaner who sits next to the driver, will project his hand and wave hysterically.
This is definitely not to be construed as a signal for a left turn. The waving is just a statement of physical relief on a hot day.
If, after all this, you still want to drive in India, have your lessons between 8 pm and 11 am-when the police have gone home and The citizen is then free to enjoy the 'FREEDOM OF SPEED' enshrined in our constitution.
Having said all this, isn't it true that the accident rate and related deaths are less in India compared to US or other countries!!? ?

Shahid Afridi , a veteran of many a ODIs and tests for Pakistan was handed over a 2 match ban for ball tampering in the final ODI with Australia.

But, in my honest view, a two match ban is too lenient. Afridi was a repeat offender. A captain of an international side who has already been handed over a similar sentence in 2005 brings disrepute to his country and the sport and reasons out that he was frustrated at not winning even a single game in the series.
And why was only he been handed over the sentence ? What about the 2 bowlers who were seen on the visuals engaging in a chat with their captain at the scene of the crime ? They too were in knowledge of the "act" and should have been punished along with their captain for abetting ball tampering. The ICC should set an example for instilling faith in them by banning him for 2 years in any form of cricket. . International Cricket Club .Are you listening ?

And then this happened. I am siding with the learned wise men within the Honorable Government of Maharashtra who were behind this move.
The government needs to pass ordinances to restrict trains, buses, planes, and public utility vehicles to be driven only by Marathis. Well , they are still pitching for additional jobs to be created.

And then , perhaps , one day , ONLY marathi manoos shall be allowed to travel by public transport vehicles. People shall eat foodgrains grown only within the state of maharastra. So much for self respect and dignity and freedom. Cows shall moo only in marathi. Dogs shall bark only in marathi.Non-marathis might not be allowed to go for loo in Maharastra.
Makes me think that there are a large number of educated illiterates in maharashtra politics.

That we Indians are good hosts is known to everybody. But, our meghalaya security forces seem to have gone an extra mile in "extending" it by playing too good a samaritan in "treating" phoren militants.
One meghalaya sub inspector of Police took a militant in an autorickshaw to meet his relative !!! May be, next , he might also be interested in treating accused for a dinner with his senior officials at a a star hotel at his expense.

We were discussing about the great Wa-Mu debacle during this weekends weekly call with my classmates..What catches our fancy is a company which has a 119 year history drops off a cliff from $35 to a $1 stock in a year and 60 - 90% downside in a day.. The consensus among us was clear. US banks have been taking investors for a ride. And that no one in the US is secure. That the confidence in US investment is at its lowest ebb..
Being retail investors, we will never invest in the US stock market, however lucrative the propects appear to be. Ones life saving is wiped off in just an hour leaving no exit route for retail investors to get off the stock once fundamentals are cleaned up.
Who are to be blamed for the debacle. Not the banks,not the investors, PE funds, I-Banks , but the credit rating agencies who gave their blind ratings based upon their utopian research staff. After this "suave" experience, investors who have been brought to the streets, should sue these credit rating agencies for misleading investors into buying these complex financial instruments.
Contrast this to the Indian stock exchanges where circuit limits are imposed twice per day to ward off any unforeseen imbalance, i would be less surprised to see such a knee jerk reaction and a swift change in price action for a security as RBI and SEBI can ward off any such disturbances.
A bank which has $188 bn ( Washington Mutual ) in deposits alone gets sold off for a paltry for $1.9 bn to the government. Huh !!!! If i were CEO of TCS ( http://www.tcs.com/), i would have used my companies one quarter revenue to buy into this bank and use this oppurtunity to expand a firm footprint in the US and provide much business to my company through IT enablement. ( sigh) ..An oppurtunity lost..
This decade would well go into the annals of the US history as Wa Mu mun and Wa Mu pin...

I had a hearty laugh on reading this article... Psychotropic.. just like my mind.. :) Read on ..

1) When there's only one other person in the elevator, tap him on
the shoulder and then pretend it wasn't you.

2) Push the buttons and pretend they give you a shock.
Smile, and go back for more.

3) Ask if you can push the button for other people, but push the
wrong ones.

4) Call the Psychic Hotline from your cell phone and ask if they
know what floor you're on.

5) Hold the doors open and say you're waiting for a friend. After a
while, let the doors close, and say, "Hi Greg. How's your day been?"

6) Drop a pen and wait until someone goes to pick it up,
then scream, "That's mine!"

7) Bring a camera and take pictures of everyone in the elevator.

8) Move your desk into the elevator and whenever anyone gets on, ask
if he has an appointment.

10) Leave a box in the corner, and when someone gets on, ask him if
he can hear ticking.

11) Pretend you are a flight attendant and review emergency

Here is a stock from the small cap space for people with a big risk apetite. The scrip is in textiles and allied industries. So is susceptible to prone to the dollar imbalances. Technically , the scrip is respecting a 2 year broadening trading range with lower boundary at 107 and upper boundary respected to be around 170 range.
If you are willing to wait till October, one can exit at around 170 with a decent profit.
What say ?

As a follow up to my earlier post, in the dying moments of NSE on Friday , May 11, I took a position in ACC at 711.2..I am excited because i got this stock very near to the days low.
My fellow trader/friend of mine advised me to strictly follow stop loss at 700 or risk a steep fall. I am looking at respecting this stop loss for the whole of next week as the position i have taken is rather huge.

Asahi India - ( CMP : 58.3) ?

The Weekly chart of Asahi India is a good example of a downward breakouttion. I wanted to take a position in this scrip when it was around 101 last year.
But, it frequently met with resistance at 120 levels and was trading b/w 100 - 120 for around 6 - 7 months, that i got disinterested after a while. As usual, after i stopped tracking, the scrip hit the roof at around 140.
This morning when i was reviewing my favourite scrips after some time, i though this scrip has a stock split, but, later found that it has been in a vicious down trend. A big fall from 140 to 60 levels. While i am not aware of any fundamental change in the scrip , what worries me is the heavy selling that has been observed in the past few weeks. Note that there is not much of a big FII or MF interest in this script. so , who is selling it and why is this script badly bruised. Publish Post

I love you!

They're all saying it these days --
in schools and colleges,
in parks and restaurants,
at workplaces and in bedrooms,
over the phone and through the e-mail.
They first say it as a declaration,
then as an assurance.

Even people who normally don't converse in English,
when it comes to expressing this primary emotion,
prefer 'I love you' to its vernacular equivalent.
Just as the way it happens in the movies:
the hero or the heroine will flirt in the regional language,
but the flirtation usually culminates
with the mouthing of the inevitable
'I love you.'

But when people say 'I love you' to each other,
what exactly do they mean?
That they want to get married?

No one knows.

But one thing is certain.

The week that went by on the markets did not surprise me.

I have been under the belief that the subsequent run-up of the markets from 16K to 20K was unwarranted. If it was Reliance and its pack of shares that took the markets to such dizzy heights, it was the tech pack that made a muted response to the strengthening rupee ( and weakening dollar)..

Nasdaq ended lowere by 2.5% on friday ..the effects of which would be felt in the indian market on monday. The charts of the IT pack bode a sorry picture..Most of the leaders in the tech pack are precariously perched at their support levels..

Next weeks retailers numbers on the Walls street may not turn out to be smooth which would mean further slide for the markets. The IT pack looks the most vulnerable in case of further bad news from the US markets of an economic recession.

Have a look at the charts for the IT pack and you will understand why. I track only a few IT stocks in the indian markets

Infy: Looks set to touch 1630 in the near term..where bargain hunters may look at buying in small lots.

TCS :

Dependable of the lot.But,if its a problem in the US, 60% of reveneues for TCS comes from the US and hence, it should also feel the pinch..Possible support at 930 levels

Geometric :

This is a stock which i went bust the moment i bought it. I am already deep red @ -7% at Diwali closing.But, this scrip has low PE compared to its peers in the IT pack..One can see a Head and Shoulder pattern at its peek..The fall from its support at 85 has not yet been arrested..So, dont go for it yet..

Just another sleepy day to begin with ,but, life would probably had been snapped for quite a few among the trading community.

9.55 Am was the very same moment the index hit the lower circuit..-9.15% on the sensex and -9.25% for the Nifty.. Just to remind time and again that this is not for the weak hearted.. If you had thought about investing today, you are already a loser..

I took a few screenshots of my terminal to cherish the "incident".Perhaps, i shall live to tell my grandchildren about the perilious risks in investments in all walks of life.

When this stock hit 130 a few months back, I was left wondering if this stock demanded such premium valuations..Now after nearly 75% downmove, the scrip has tested its support levels at 54-55. A move below would signal bye bye ,whereas , if it can hold on to this level, the scrip can weave back to 70 levels. Observe that ths scrip is confinned to a triangle pattern formation on the longterm charts..
Buy with a stop loss at 54..

Time to get in

With Hedge funds running for cover, the following stocks have come under my radar for shortterm/long term investment..

Indian Hotels ( CMP:124.5)
Perched o nits support, this stock has seen a gap at around 135 levels which has to be covered in the short term. After 135 is attained, this stock would face resistance at 147-150 levels..Stop loss ia 120.

Cipla ( CMP:183.5)
On of my favourite stocks these days because of the relatively less Beta values, this scrip spooked me this friday when it went down to hit 176. 175 is probably the last support for this stock. And this stock has bounced admirably well form this position. Cipla has an unusually high FII data and it may be because of hedge fund pullout that this scrip went to test the support.But, the positive thing for friday for this stock is the presence of a bullish hammer which suggests a key reversal pattern. A test of 200 is on the cards.If this level is pierced through, we may see that the scrip may bounce back to its previous high of 240 - 260 levels if it can sail above 200 comfortably.

I have little knowledge about the fundamentals of the following.I have heard of Moschip before. Moschip has been making some noise in the last 1 year.Other than that,lets analyse ( at my friends request)how Moschip and the others fare.

Moschip (CMP:25)/MOSCHIP :
Long term and near term support is at 24.5. Which is why we see that the scrip is loitering around the same level after a year.When it broke the resistance Jan 07,the resistance level became the new support.Thus ,the scrip raced to 37.5 and fell back at its support at 29. This support was finally broken in March leading to a sharp fall.
My advise would be ,if you are interested in small profits, buy now and sell at 27. Or,if you prefer to wait for THE BIG FISH, prefer better returns elsewhere,wait for a break above 27.5 and then buy into it then.We may have 2 courses here. The exit point would be a close below 23 in any case.Money making oppurtunities exists only on a breakout from triangles and rectangles.( That breakouts do happen in the downward direction too is a possible scenario) which is why i make a mention of stop-loss of 23.No a sound investment for the moment.

Carol Info(CMP:54)/CAROL :
The technicals first. Moving average signals a buy.MACD positive.OBV positive.Currently,near term support is at around 54,the scrip is just a tad below its support.Hmm.. Even when the market hit rock bottom,this scrip still seems to trace an ascending path.

Cons :
The scrip is distributed.The scrip moves on thin volumes.So, any bad news,investors are stuck with no immediate exit routes.

My comments:
Buy at around 50-52 range with stop-loss at 45.If volumes do not bother you, you may enter this scrip. I dont hold any fundamental views on this scrip though.

Advanced Micronic Device (Rs.32)
The price pattern traced by the chart is erratic.Less said the better.High risk.Low liquidity.Exit if invested.Stay away if not. Look for better investment avenues.

Sugary syrup

(Note:Charts in order from Bottom to top, Bajaj Hindustan,Balrampur Chinni,Dhampur sugar,Rajshree Sugar)
Sensex and Nifty scaled new heights on Friday ( 10 th November).Most index stocks were defying the laws of gravity.But, the mood in the sugar camp was depressing.The government has not yet made up its mind on reviewing the ban on sugar.Incidentally,Sugar has the heaviest weightage among all commodity prices in the WPI( Wholesale Price Index).
The FM,Chiddus policy is simple.Keep sugar prices down and with that you bring down the infaltion figures. The result has been that many of sugar stocks are in a "Will-it..Will-it-Not" situation.Technically speaking, the scrips are in a make or break situation.I have reviewed the following scrips and would recommend it only for the traders who have an appetite for risk.
First things first.My universe is limited to Top 200 stocks in NSE/BSE.Hence, only Bajaj Hindustan,its smaller cousin,Balrampur Chinni,Dhampur Sugar fall into the ambit.Rajshree Sugars made it to the league because of the increased confidence by its Chairman,Shree Rajsree Pathy .

Bajaj Hindustan(CMP:289.5) :
The script has bright potential if and only if it clears the 346 level comfortably.The script had earlier rosen from 195 in Nov 2005 to 568 in April 2006 and has now been dumped at its current level.At this trading zone,the script has made atleast 3 unsuccessful attempts and reversed at this resistance level(346).Curiously , the next support was perched at 300 which too has now been broken by fridays movement. We now face the risk of hitting the next support at 270 nd then at 250.BTW,250 is a strong support and one can safely make fresh investment at 250-275 zone for a handsome gain in the next 3 months.Just another thought here. Never attempt intra day trade in Bajaj Hindustan. Never!!You may get wiped away in seconds.

Balrampur Chinni(CMP:97.45)
That brings us to its younger brother Balrampur Chinni to the fore.Technically,this scrip is in a better position compared to the earlier one(Big B!!).90 is the strong support zone.This scrip is in a long term consolidating mode ,moving in an ascending triangle.If breached, a move to sub 80 levels is on cards.On the upper end of the triangle, we may see a target of 126 for this scrip.Balrampur is less volatile compared to Bajaj Hind and a worthy scrip to invest at 95-98 levels.Keep a strict stop-loss at 89.You may never know the decision of the government in this regard.

Dhampur Sugar( CMP:108)
The negative sentiment on the sugar sector had a profound impact on this stock as well.This scrip is near its yearly low.if only i could get my IPO refund, i would like to invest my money in this scrip.Beware.This scrip is exactly at its support.If 108 is broken a slide to the next support zone at 104 is on the cards.

Rajshree Sugar(CMP:97.4 ):
The volumes on friday would convey to me that this looks to be a false move. By my analysis, the scrip shall soon enter a buy mode.We shall have to wait for a close above 110 to confirm it.On the other hand,one may place a Stop-loss at 90.With the market at an all-time high, this week,if we have a 300 point slide on the sensex, one may have to run for cover as Rajshree is the weakest link of the lot.
And that is why,it is always advisable to repose faith in index stocks like Bajaj Hind and Balrampur Chinni.

Tata Steel - Time to increase exposure.

Tata steel(CMP:501) would be a good buy at the moment.The Corus buyout has not provided any fresh impetus to the scrip.
The scrip has been trading within an ascending triangle. 27 th October saw trading activity picking up in this stock. From the chart front, though we may see an upside breakout at 540 and a downside breakout at 485, we can start making fresh investments from this levels. Being an Index heavyweight,Tata Steel is a relatively safe bread and butter stock to invest in. The worlds richest man, Bill Gates, on a recent visit to India , had stressed on the need for an increased broadband penetraton. PCs , for him , were just an element of penetration.

Gates does have a point.Lets pick up some statistics...Assuming that out of a population on 1 billion,only 120 million have access to telephone, the vast majority people(I am referring to fellow Indians) do not have a PC.The percentage of netizens having access to a broadband or any kinda net access is thus negligible.
On a sinister thought,why should Gates be bothered about improving quality of broadband connectivity. My idle brain suggests that, Gates and many bureacrats know very well that Internet is a window to the future. There exists a wide range of commercial aspect in the net, be it shopping, online gaming, internet telephony, Internet TV,e-governance(a much abused word in Indian governance). Microsoft has a slew of products targetted at Internet and India is one market which is yet to be untapped. When the second fastest growing economy in the world unfolds itself on the internet, the gains would be manifold.
I beg your pardon , if the passage conveys the impression against broadband connectivity, but, my emphasis is that a broadband connectivity cannot make a big difference to the masses.
Is the window to the net,a must for the common man?
Does staying connected help improve the quality of life of ordinary citizens??
How many households in India own a Simputer lest their own TV/Radio ?
Cost to produce a microprocessor is less than quarter dollar,When will a computer be made affordable to the masses..atleast below $50 ?
We are yet to provide a telephone connection to all rural households. Not all rural villages have access to power and health facilities.GDP grows at the rate of 8%, computerization grows at 13%, but,agriculture ,power and infrastructure sectors grow at an abysmal rate of 2%. Our population grows at a pace of 1.4%(Source) !!!Think about the housing facility to them.There still is a long way to go before both ends meet.
How good are we at adapting to new technology.How good are we at changing our lifestyle? We are not embracing new technologies for the benefit of people yet.
Take the case of the CORDECT( WLL, developed by Prof.Jhunjunwala and his team at IIT,Madras) technology which provides telephony with nearly no additional infrastructure involved.If we had resolved to provide all new connections on WLL, atleast 20% of new connections would not get disrupted by earthquake or floods.One relay station would have served 25 square Kms.
The alternative would be laying underground cables by digging roads( not new to our government agencies) , physical wiring across cross-country and reaching each and every household , not achievable in even our childrens lifetime.Similar is the case for providing health and power facilities.
Quality of life needs to be improved on so many other fronts , that , broadband , i feel is not a necessity now.Mr.Bill, don't count your bills before they multiply!!!

Strategy FTW

Hello All,
Yesterday was a good day for us.Markets went down by 48 points..Yet, India Bulls and Hindalco saved the day for us. Let me tell you one strategy that I have been following these days..No doubt we are choosy in selecting the scrips that we invest. But, sometimes , after selling those scrips at a reasonable price, we often( atleast I ) see that the scrip zooms to further 15% appreciation.
To confront such a scenario, assume that you buy, say 500 shares of Hindalco.When you achieve your price target, sell 80% of your holdings ( 400 in this case)..The 100 shares can be preserved for long term appreciation. That way, you dont stand to lose even in case you scrip falls below your acquisition price and you are still in the party if the scrip drifts further up.

Having said that, Arvind Mills is still waiting on the runway to take off.( I guess its taking time to get re-fuelled for a pretty long time!!)

Heres my take for the near term.

Data Interpretation with NSE/BSE data for December-January months

I was sieving through some historical data on Nifty ..There was some curious observations that I have made particularly on the data between the months of December and January for the past 5 years...Hope you would concur on the same and get benefitted by these
My interpretation is as follows :
Oct 2001 – Jan 2002
Nifty starts its onward journey around 5-Oct 2001 and reaches its peak by 12-dec-2001.

Oct 2002– Jan 2003
Nifty starts its onward journey around 10-Oct 2002 and reaches its peak by 30-dec-2002.

Oct 2003– Jan 2004
Nifty starts working its way around 1-Oct 2003 and reaches its peak by 15-Jan-2004.

Oct 2004– Jan 2005
Nifty starts rising from around 25-Oct 2004 and reaches its peak by 2 -Jan-2005.

Plan A for this winter 2005 – Jan 2006
Nifty starts its ascension around 25-Oct 2004 making history on every trading day. The bulls are making merry at the moment. But, something tells me that the euphoria would be shortlived.Looks like the market is being heavily manipulated.
Titan Industies has one of the lowest delivery volumes, yet, appreciated by 100% in 2 months.This stock has been gang-raped repeatedly.
Ranbaxy would have been totally written off for comng up with such a poor result,but for some market players,its riding reasonably high.All crests,but , no troughs is worrying.Damn those mutual funds and FIIs. they must be heavily taxed.
Whatever business Godrej Industries is doing,would you believe a turnaround in business fortunes amounting to 20% capital appreciation in just one day? Such meterorical rise acts against the interest of retailers(aka gullible investors).
My universe of stocks is narrowing down to around 50 these days.
For retailers, historical data points to market peaking out by 1 st week of Jan 2006. So, if you are still invested in the markets, book profits by last week of December and stay in cash. It’s a murky world out there with the bears taking a nap for the moment.
Theres nothing to be worried about for the moment. Absolutely no need to panic. Yeah.No need to panic.No need to panic. What are you still waiting for ? I am politely saying “Get out of the markets.You don’t have much time left".
For those who are yet to plan their exit strategy, have your Plan B and Plan C ready with you by end December 2005.For those willing to hang around for a longer period of time, I would recommend the below stocks for the moment as these look like a safe bet.

Guj NRE Coke ( best buy below 110 ) - Iron Ore
IPCL ( Buy below 230 ) - Oil
India Bulls ( Buy in small lots below 155 ) - Financial Services
Oriental Bank of Commerce ( buy below 250 ) - Banking
Arvind Mills ( buy below 110 ) - Textile
Intuition tells me that Indian Oil ( below 505 ) ,Financial Technologies(Financial) and Selan Exoration Technologies(Oil) also look attactive at the moment, but, I leave this to the discretion of the reader.

Look towards paring exposures upon appreciation by 10-20 %.

On a parting note, Financial Technologies chart gives me an Oooommph!!!! Look at its historical data...People would have made a killing in it!!!

Chennai Rains on TV...

Want to have some real time pass? Watch Sun TV and Jaya TV trying to outwit( outfool??) each other..One says the poor are hit hard by the recent downpour..the other says that the President,PM and whos who in the political circles are praising the govt for the deaft handling(?) of the situation.
One says there is a scam in distributing relief material, the other says everybodys needs have been taken care off.
Whom are these people trying to satiate??
Are there anybody to wield the baton on these two unruly mob for running amuck??
Why do they exist?
When are we going to see unbiased journalism from these two?
A strict case of moral journalism giving way to commercial journalism. Both these channels act as a good reference point for aspiring journalists on what not to be.
The stark truth is that both are in a different world altogether.The reality is that the poor continue to suffer as most are done in by land mafia into settling down on what once were regular waterways. Build your sweet home on those waterways and you ought to see them disappear in the next rains.
A river should have its own course and when once man tries to outwit nature, nature has its own way of responding. Saidapet,Velachery or for that case, any place on earth, the message is clear. DO NOT ty to distate things to mother nature.
Whos bothered by the huge amount of precious water let out into the open sea anyway??
Why have we not learnt from the past mistakes? Had those waterways and lakes been desilted on time , such a situation would have been avoided easily.
Both these channels seem to have lost thoughts about these in trying to our-report each other.
Blame it on commercialisation.Blame it on viewers who encourage the TRP ratings of these channels by watching them.
